Animal biotechnology engineer giving hope to the livestock farms
Head director Gil Saeng Jeong is a founder and pioneer of Korea animal biotechnology, who introduced its concept, contents, and research methods to Korea for the first time in the era when even the term of animal biotechnology did not exist.
In the research area of domestic animal reproduction which had focused on basic study and technology development related to artificial insemination of livestock, he introduced basic theory and technology related to embryo transfer to make a milestone to open the era of animal biotechnology even in Korea. He announced publicly experimental animal and big livestock, developed basic theory and technology over the whole area of animal biotechnology and published the results in 392 articles at home and abroad. Due to his pioneering study, the base of animal biotechnology was founded and university education and research of this area were initiated at last.
He contributed to the elevation of the educational level of animal biotechnology and enhancement of scientific and technical minds of society in universities by publishing 18 technical books on biotechnology, supplying them as lecture materials and writing 6 related cultural books to be supplied to the society based on his study results.
With study to make a calf of Korean native cattle-milk cow deliver with fertilized egg plantation and study to produce lactoferrin (one of the ingredients of breastmilk) via bovine external fertilization, contributed to an income increase of livestock farm
He applied new theories and technologies obtained from basic science study to the livestock production field to establish unique livestock production technology system combining advanced biotechnological techniques such as superovulation induction, nonsurgical collection of fertilized egg, external fertilization, nuclear substitution of fertilized egg, discrimination of XX-embryo and XY-embryo, exotic gene induction in the fertilized egg, freezing and thawing of fertilized egg, nonsurgical transplantation of embryo, and induction of artificial twin. These advanced technologies made a great contribution to the income increase of Korean livestock farms and international competitiveness enhancement of Korean agriculture.
Developed in-vitro fertilization technology of human egg for the first time of Korea
Head director Gil Saeng Jeong is also well known for developing the in vitro fertilization technique of human egg and teaching it to several obstetrics and gynecology physicians. He taught in vitro fertilization related theories and technologies to obstetrics and gynecology physicians with no knowledge on in vitro fertilization technique of human egg, dispatched trained graduated students to fertility centers they open and assisted them technically to support nationwide installment of IVF centers. In 2005 currently, at least 10,000 babies per year are born in nationwide fertility centers and 43 ex-graduate students of his laboratory participate in the fertility centers of 37 hospitals nationwide and lead the practical production of IVF babies. In vitro fertilization (IVF) technology he developed and his disciples who learned it contributes substantially solution of a serious demographic cliff in Korea today.
He devoted himself to the training technical personnel as well as research activities and produced 82 masters, 40 doctors, and 6 post-doctoral fellows, serving as a professor of the college of animal life science, Konkuk University for 33 years since 1973. They play leading roles in pulling research and industrial development of Korean animal biotechnology in academic, research, medical and industrial communities. Serving as the president of the general university as ex-scientist, he concentrated in education and research of science and technology and attracted 14 BK21 project units. From their operation, he contributed to the development of Korea science and technology and the production of brains in the science and technology area.
As the president of Korean Academy of Science and Technology, he promoted the development of Korea Science and Technology and enhance its international status by concluding substantial academic exchange agreements with academies in developed countries including Israel, Germany, Sweden, France, and the USA and establishing a system to implement mutual joint studies and joint conferences. He prepared opportunities for exchange with global great scholars by dispatching our young scientists to international conferences including the STS forum and Lindau forum. In order to elevate status of Korean Academy of Science and Technology started later, he founded Inter-Academy Seoul Science Forum and invited directors and great scholars from global academies and held large scale academic forums in Seoul, which contributes greatly to elevation of Korea science and technology level and enhancement of international status of Korean Academy of Science and Technology. He contributed to planning and enforcement of national policies in science and technology area including biotechnology through activities of ‘National Assembly – Science and Technology Innovation Group of National Academy' where about 30 technical committees of central government departments such as ‘Presidential Advisory Council for Science and Technology’, 142 members of National Academy, and 78 members of the National Assembly join.
