Korea No.1 doctor of electric engineering who made the foundation of Korea electric power industry
Professor Man Choon Han is called the father of the Korea electric power industry to the presented theoretical background for an upgrade of distribution voltage, as Korea No.1 doctor of electric engineering.
Graduating from the faculty of electric engineering, Kyungsung University and working as a manager of the planning department and power generation department in Joseon Jeoneop (KEPCO), he played a great role in overcoming the serious electric power shortage of Korea from the sudden power outage of North Korea after the liberation. He contributed to the improvement of industrial technology and production of industrial skilled manpower, leading industry-university collaboration and participating in the International Vocational Training Competition as the Korea representative.
Presented theoretical background for an upgrade of distribution voltage 220/380V
Professor Man Choon Han is the first doctor of engineering in Korea electricity and control engineering, who went to study abroad to Nottingham University, the UK with governmental scholarship and obtained a doctoral degree in engineering. He proved a theory that the network function value is unstable at a specific value in a minus zone in the period predicted that the network function value was instable in the whole minus region to introduce a concept of control engineering in the electrical power system. Accordingly, he contributed to the security of stability in the domestic and foreign power generation and electrical power system.
It was evaluated that he expanded the power system and made a turning point of electric power supply to farm village and home in the 1970s by providing the grounds to 220/380V voltage upgrade to reduce the loss of voltage from lower distribution voltage (110V). As many countries had a huge loss of distribution voltage as 110 V, the voltage upgrade is evaluated higher from the developed countries.
Manufacture the Korea first computer, ‘Yonsei 101 Analogue Computer’ to lead the development of the electronics industry
One of his works well known widely was 'Yonsei 101 Analogue Electronic Calculator’ manufactured in 1961. He designed and manufactured the first analog computer for the first time in Korea in the 1960s, before wide distribution of current digital computer.
'Yonsei 101 Analogue Electronic Calculator’ was used in a lot of studies such as stability improvement of an electric power system and development of controller and study on the stability of nuclear power generation. It was also widely in the interpretation of industrial problems such as interpretation of the electric power area and produced a lot of achievements. Its system manufacturing process, manufacturing technology, and manufacturing results were made to an article, evaluated to prepare the base of domestic computer technology, and registered as cultural assets (No. 557) rarely in science and technology.
He started research and education as an assistant professor at Seoul National University at the early age of 27, in 1948 and served as the first president of faculty of engineering, college of science and engineering, and industrial graduate school in Yonsei University. He prepared the foundation of electric engineering education in the initial stage as the chairman of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers and contributed greatly to the development of Korea science and technology.
He served as the chairman of Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers (1973~1977) as its founding member and led electrical standard and contributed to its internationalization as the chairman of Korea Committee, International Electro-technical Commission (IEC)
